Not quite two hours later they pulled off the road and into a deep grove of trees. Death, Kija, and Taye climbed out of the Jeep and made sure their tracks were covered. Minutes later Raidon pulled up, and the rest of the inner circle joined them as they headed to the house where Cong and Sitara were holding Kija’s daughter.

All around them birds chirped and leaves rustled as animals scurried to and fro as if everything were normal. He’d never been allowed to be alone with Takara, but Kija had sensed how unhappy she was. It seemed wrong somehow that the woodland creatures were merrily going about their business.

“There.”

Raidon nodded at the shack that couldn’t be more than twelve feet by twelve feet. The wood was rotted, and it looked like a stiff wind would topple the structure.

He glared at his inner circle. “You let them keep her here without telling me?” He couldn’t have kept the growl out of his voice if he’d wanted. Considering the conditions his daughter had been forced to endure, he wanted to do a lot more than growl.

“What would you have had us do?” Raidon growled right back at Kija. “You refused to listen to anything we had to say for the last twelve years.”

“At least we’ve been watching out for Takara,” Mica said, “which is a helluva lot more than you’ve done.”

Kija winced at the accurate accusation. “You’re right. Takara wouldn’t even be in this rat hole if I had done my job.”

“Let’s worry about blame later.”

Taye pointed to the road leading up to the front of the house where two SUVs were bumping along the dirt path. Death and Raidon had mostly stayed off the roads, especially as they’d gotten closer to where Takara was being held. That way, Cong and Sitara wouldn’t see them. It also meant they hadn’t known if the pair was heading in this direction or not.

Kija held his breath as the two vehicles stopped in front of the little shack. Several doors opened. Guards with high-powered rifles climbed out first. Then one more door opened, and Sitara stepped out.

The forest seemed to freeze as if sensing the evil that was now present. Silence enveloped them in an oppressive blanket, a warning to all of the danger that lurked nearby.

They watched as the bitch walked to the front door. Just as she reached for the doorknob, Kija realized he hadn’t seen Cong. “Does anyone see Cong?” Kija craned his neck, trying and see in both vehicles but he didn’t see much.

No one could make out if there was anyone else inside the dark interior of the SUVs. “Mica, Seiko, you two check out the vehicles and eliminate the guards. Katana, you have our backs.”

Without a word, Katana weaved his way through the trees. With the speed and stealth of his Bengal tiger, Katana climbed one of the trees as close to the shack as possible. Once he was in position, even Kija had a hard time making him out.
